"And maybe I will! Who better to hide a crime than someone who solves crimes, huh? You know all the tricks. And you know, you're in Hell, so technically you're already a crooked cop."
"Do you really want an answer to that?" Is their flat reply. Because yes, they have seen him naked multiple times. Yes, they don't mind having seen him naked.
But they'd also do it just to be a shit.
"Considering how well you can bullshit, that makes sense. What, you wanna try conning Hell itself?"
He's going to ignore that flat answer. Because then he wins. Totally.
His head tilts thoughtfully.
"You know, when you say it like that, it sounds really cool," He says, grinning like a twelve year old. "Héctor Rivera, the man who conned Hell itself. I really like the ring of that."
How exactly he would con Hell he doesn't know but that doesn't matter right now.
The look they give him makes it clear they know he's totally dodging what they said. But moving on.
"Yeah, that does sound pretty badass." There's probably books written about it and thinking about Héctor doing it makes them snort. "Working your way to the top by conning all the other assholes out of work."
Sin list a mile long, but they're not saying that.
There's a giddiness, like what always came with making plans in his youth. And past that.
"If I don't get out of Hell the proper way, that's what I'm going to do." Because that definitely sounds like a smart thing to do. Even without the mile long sin list.
"Me! Lord of Hell! Ay, Dios, the sisters would lose their minds!" They'd probably lose their minds at this conversation alone. One of their (albeit squirrelly) wards being the new anti-christ?
"Well, if that ever happens, I definitely promise better music," He jokes.
The corners of their mouth twitch in amusement and Nekane snorts. Héctor, Lord of Hell. It absolutely does not sound intimidating at all.
"Thank fucking Christ." They sound a little dramatic but it's fine. "It'd be less of a shitshow anyway."
For many, many reasons. But now the pop tarts are done and they rub the back of their neck. There are parts of their back they still can't feel and their wings are as heavy as ever, but they do feel much better anyway.
"Well, I would try to make it better," He laughs. He wouldn't get far but it's the thought that counts, probably.
He could probably go forever but he thinks he's done the best he can for now, as far as their back goes. He sees the way they reach back, that bit of comfort on their face. He sees that small bit of a smile and it touches his heart.
He takes the plate from them, moving to set it aside. He's still got his own food, now a bit cold but he doesn't mind that much. He settles with it in the bed, happy to sit beside them.
"If you'd like to stay the night, you can," He says then. "I don't know if you got any sleep before, but, you know, offer's open." He knows they don't like to sleep. But they know that he doesn't mind them here. He'd push the issue but they'd taken a lot of steps today already. It'll be their choice.
Nekane thinks to say no, they didn't get any sleep before but they realize how that sounds with context and keeps it to themself. The less ammo they give their own idiocy, the better.
"Wait, so you actually want me to sleep under your bed?" They say instead. Which is so much better then what they could have said. Nailed it.
But they are actually joking. The urge to hide in tight corners is still there and probably will never go away because nothing ever does. But the alternatives Héctor suggested were far better. So.
