Name: Héctor Rivera (his last name IS a spoiler. He can be listed as just Héctor or Héctor R. if desired)
Canon: Coco
Age: 21
Appearance: Link link link
Canon Point: Pre-movie, 1921, his death.
Background: Wiki Link. I'll also be referencing of the Coco Novella and other Coco children's books for character padding along with the main movie. One thing inferred from "Miguel and The Grand Harmony" is that he played alone in the plaza as a child. As well, Mexican Women historically didn't typically take their husbands last names, thus implying he had none of his own and took hers, further implying he was likely orphaned, a common thing with revolutions and coming from a poorer indigenous background (his belt buckle features Nahua symbology, implying this), FURTHER meaning that due to the era he was likely raised in by nuns. As this is a larger extrapolation than most things pulled from his source materials, I feel it best to clarify here as to where it comes from.
Personality: Héctor's best and worst traits are inextricably linked. He is kind, doting, and deeply affectionate and welcoming to those he cares for, giving every ounce of his heart. But he spreads himself thin before the events of the movie, trying to gain this from all the world and seeking favor in people who would throw him away.
He's perceptive of the emotions of others and quickly accomdating to the needs of those around him. When a child is scared, he lowers himself down to their level and speaks softer. When encouragement or distraction is called for, he's quick to provide both cheer. He offers distance and physical comfort however it matches the other person's needs, no matter the situation, even if it conflicts with his own wishes.
In that same breath, he has little to no backbone. His first real push back happens when he decides to quit his tour and leave his friend but even that took months and much of his later growth in this respect is born of bitterness that even then doesn't completely stop him from being swayed. Where more powerful personalities are involved he can shrink like a scolded dog and for those he's less afraid of he still offers little defense or excuse for himself. While this may seem to be maturity in some ways, taking responsibility, more often than not his lack of explanation (or even suggesting the other should have expected this from him) leave him looking even worse, like he made NO effort and doesn't care about their feelings. He grew up under the wing of his best friend, a boy four years older with a penchant for emotional manipulation. Héctor has only barely begun to seperate from that at his current canon point and so it's what he's accustomed to.
His major break from this was starting a family of his own. They're everything to him, his daughter most of all. For her, his sheer determination is all but unstoppable. He is barely able to move on the energy he has but goes on anyway through willpower alone. Although he doesn't seek to harm any other person, that is just about the only thing in which he is held back on his goals. For nearly a century he is dead set on one single goal and nothing, not the rejection of his family, the loss of his life's work, the slow but inevitable destruction of his body in the land of the dead, the repeated catastrophic failures-- none of it is enough to stop him from trying, year after year, to cross the marigold bridge. Needless to say it's something he'd have died for. While this goal was for something of very, very great importance to him like nothing else, it nevertheless stands as a testament to far he's willing to go.
Because he holds his daughter as absolute priority, he sacrifices his relationships with just about every he meets in order to reach her. With so little resources in the way of fixing his situation, a wild and wily persona is born thereof. He wields the desperation in his existence and carves out of himself this overly enthusiastic false self which lies, often and repeatedly, all in attempt to con and manipulate others into giving their assistance-- or their things, to assist him only to lose those treasured things later. He tries to ply with bargains, bids for sympathy, plenty of empty promises, and outright lies. While it doesn't reflect on whether or not he cares for the person, it most certainly burns up whatever trust there might have been. Not to mention the rather large criminal record his schemes eventually create. Without desire or intention, he has a habit of casting matches onto bridges.
After having spent so much time in this persona without finding peace, Héctor can sometimes tunnel vision onto his own desires, forgetting how he might sound to others before it's too late. It's an attempt to charm others with cheer and optimism but it is likewise an attempt to compartmentalize his own struggles and pain. He keeps those cards close to his chest and by becoming this wilder version of himself, it's easier to keep those cards hidden away. Sometimes he does this simply to avoid having to face the pain of it all himself, shaking off a traumatic event with sudden cheer and hurrying along. Sometimes, he does it out of respect for another, hiding the misdeeds someone's preformed so they can take responsibility themselves, or simply to hide their association with him-- something typically unwanted. He does a lot of burying which usually results in him being the one to get buried. Especially when he only shoves back the reasons but allows his unhappiness with a given thing to show, leaving those others without the much needed context to, once again, assume the worst.
Within the film, Héctor comments that he hates musicians as he thinks they're self-important jerks. While this is directed at others, it's all a reflection of his opinion on himself, believing that he must have had an inflated ego in life to do what he did. He is not shy to boast in little ways, but the truth is that his opinion deep down is poor.
He can be silly and charming and inspiring (his work touched hearts and sent his friend soaring to fame) as well as moody and immature (teasing and mocking all for laughs, sulking and shoving when mockery is turned on him). He's a perpetual young adult and it shows, for better and worse.
Weaknesses/Temptations: Héctor is a follower by nature. He gives in easily to bolder (and more aggressive) personalities on the whole and is especially susceptible to going along with things when he's formed an emotional attachment to that person. He can be very easily manipulated, especially at the early canon point he's at, and generally lacks a spine. It takes a great deal for him to really push back, especially against those he cares for even if those he cares for are actually terrible people. On that note, he does tend to see the best in everyone, which leaves him blind to a lot of the worst.
He's a man of small vices like drink and playful rowdiness. He doesn't see much wrong with any of that and only being in hell itself is something apt to make him reconsider this (but may or may not actually convince him).
Although he's just learned at his canon point that playing for strangers "like a monkey" isn't something he aspires to, he still deeply craves attention and affection. He wants to be loved at the core of it, and not just facetiously (as is the like of fans and fame). He wants deep friendships and family bonds, something that may be hard to find in hell, but nevertheless it's something to sway him.
And to that line of thought, there is almost nothing in the world he wouldn't do for his daughter. At this canon point, his smaller sins of theft and lying and conning are merely teenage antics. At his later movie canon point, these are things he actively engages in for the sake of trying to reach his daughter. His wife too would be a strong lure but none so much as his daughter. For the sake of trying to see her, he'd betray any person here, even a friend. For the sake of protecting her/saving her from something terrible he might be convinced into worse but this would mess him up significantly and would take a lot of push and still fall on the circumstances.
Finally, he does sometimes show himself to be resentful of those he feels have wronged him or who have the power to help (him) but choose not to. He doesn't have the patience for those who openly look down on him or deny him what he needs.
Sins:
1. Abandonment of wife and child
2. Theft
3. Lying
4. Grifting
5. Indulgence of impure substances
6. Neglect of prayer and church attendance
7. Resentfulness
8. Turning a blind eye
9. Cowardice
Powers/Abilities: N/A, he's just a talented musician, nothing more.
Items:
1. His guitar
2. Change of clothes (can this count as one?)
3. A photo of him posed with his family
4. His songbook
5. A train ticket
6. A second photograph of himself

Network: (As Héctor is from the 1900's, he's not likely to figure out texting and network posts on his own. With help, he may type things as one writes letters. It might read like:)
[Like a telegram, right? Like a telegram. He's never used a telegram. He'd stayed in town and then wrote letters by hand, but surely it can't be that hard to figure out. Everyone else seems to have. He presses a button that he was told would turn it "on" and then clears his throat. He only needs to speak what he has to say...]
Hell, Penance hotel [If this is at all on film, he's mostly squinting at the device. He mutters quieter.] ...I don't know the address for this place...
To whoever should find this message. Stop.
I hope this reaches you in good tidings- despite where we are. Stop. I am looking for some things here that I am having trouble finding on my own. Stop. I seek some proper plumas, ink, paper, and, if at all possible down here, a pocket-sized copy of the bible. Stop. Those who can supply any one of these things, please bring it to Héctor in room [His room is listed.]. Stop. Muchas Gracias. Stop.
Héctor Rivera.
(In a previous game here, where he's been au'd to modern era, he does pick up a slightly more modern approach.)
