Wist, that's not how it works, you can't just tell someone to be your date. It's something that has to be agreed upon. Otherwise, it's coercion and that's a bad thing.

I did say it didn't have to be romantic, but it depends on who you're talking to. For me, I associate things like this too much with that person. I'd be thinking about them the whole time and feeling guilty and not having fun with you like I should and it would be a real drag. That's not fair to you. It might make the person I like feel bad too. I think it would be better if you try asking someone else.

What about Poe? He's your best friend and all. Or maybe another friend here, if he's not interested.

Do you see what's happening here? Where you're suggesting nice things and I'm sort of making them less nice because I'm worried about how it would all go with this person of mine and feeling bad about the thought of things? That's what it would be like. The whole night. I would be the one who isn't fun. Do you see what I'm saying?

I'm going to have to talk with that person and see what they say. And you should probably see if there's anyone else who you'd like to go with, or who would like to go with you. We keep talking and sorting things out, like friends do. And then, one way or another, we'll meet up with each other at the dance. And we can still have a good time there, like that.

And I won't promise, but maybe, maybe, I'll manage at least one dance with you and me.

But the worst case scenario is that there will probably be another one of these next year. Usually, only graduating kids do this in regular high schools but it sort of looks like this one's a free for all. You don't need to pin your hope all on me or this dance. It'll be okay.

You can't stop my "that person" from saying no though. That's coercion again. And I would rather that they're happy than stuck with me.

They might say no for a lot of reasons. Feelings are complicated. We were together once, but we haven't been for a long time too. They might have moved on, or even want to avoid the pain I left them with. Or could leave them with. They may find we're too different now from who we used to be. Or they could just say no because I'm technically a corpse and for most living humans that's not only illegal but really unpleasant. It may simply be that they don't love me anymore, even if we're doing better. It might be embarassing for them to let people think we're together. Or they might just not want to go to a dance, especially if it gives them bad memories.

Like I said, lots of reasons.

I think if they'd like to go with me as a friend, I could be okay with that.
They're important to me, and I want them to know that, but I know it could be better for them without me.
It would be a little sad, but that's it's a kind I can try to live with. Metaphorically speaking.

But I'll tell you what, no matter what happens, even if the dance doesn't work out, we'll find something else that's fun that you and I can do.
