❥ Name: Héctor (Last name Rivera is a movie spoiler, Second last name Adomaitis is from CRAU, please leave both out of tags)
❥ Canon: Coco
❥ Canon Point: The cenote scene
❥ Fandom OC Approval: N/A
❥ History: Wiki Link. I'll also be referencing of the Coco Novella and other Coco children's books for character padding along with the main movie. One thing inferred from "Miguel and The Grand Harmony" is that he played alone in the plaza as a child. As well, Mexican women historically didn't typically take their husband's last names, thus implying he had none of his own and took his wife's, further implying he was likely orphaned, a common thing with revolutions and coming from a poorer indigenous background (his belt buckle features Nahua symbology, implying this), FURTHER meaning that due to the era he was likely raised in by nuns. As this is a larger extrapolation than most things pulled from his source materials, I feel it best to clarify here as to where it comes from as I did in his original app to Penance.
❥ CRAU?: CW: Hell, assault, torture, emotional manipulation, abuse, death, disordered eating, consent issues, body horror, references to non/dubcon (An opt-out will be available for players should this app be accepted and I will seek not to spring the more triggering content on anyone.)
At what had appeared to be the moment of his death, Héctor woke up in Hell with (albeit short) list of sins. He was initially horrified, desperate to get out and go home, afraid of being hurt and afraid of the other sinners. He was put through several tortures right away, one in which he met Nekane.
The two built an alliance of sorts, then a friendship. Although Nekane carried a lot of trauma from their life that made them difficult at times, they supported one another through various horrors and tortures. He also met Squalo, an assassin, with whom another strange friendship formed over the respective lost loves, and then later, Dodger, a terrible man who tried to scare Héctor but mostly just managed to make him feel pity.
His first death in Hell came at the hands of a cenobite. He soon faced another great trauma that same month when, after he and Nekane had tricked and cheated the succubi and incubi several times, they were assaulted. After this, Nekane and Héctor made a deal; they would rely on one another, look out for each other, everything they needed to stay sane and survive, completely attatchment free.
Soon after, while looking for ways to protect Nekane, he found Dodger, drunk. Afraid that Dodger might be attacked, he quickly worked to help Dodger get away. Through this, and his own bad past (with a terrible abusive cult and more), Dodger worked out something of Héctor's plans and what had happened. Despite things before, Dodger offered comfort and ended up being one of the very few with that knowledge.
Nevertheless, Dodger was not a good person. That month people were left to starve. Héctor was already struggling with food, believing he'd died of food poisoning while suffering the effects of what was actually arsenic poisoning. Dodger, concerned for Héctor, brought "food". This was, as Héctor soon worked out by Dodger's caginess, human meat. Héctor refused it and Dodger became furious. Héctor earned his second death as Dodger used his power and strength to burn him and break his body.
This continued to snowball. Because of Dodger, Héctor finally suspected Ernesto had poisoned him. He asked Nekane about poisoning, just to be sure, but they became worried and checked on him. Once confirmed, Héctor became upset. Nekane comforted him, but soon became suspicious that more had happend, eventually uncovering what Dodger had done despite Héctor's attempts to hide it. Not wanting more problems, he begged Nekane not to go after Dodger, which Nekane would ignore, killing Dodger. Squalo also heard and then avenged Héctor, bringing the revived-then-re-killed Dodger's head, which he had not wanted. Finally, Dodger himself asked to talk, and though deeply reluctant and suspicious, Héctor agreed. Dodger attempted to apologize, to explain, and Héctor said he wouldn't forgive, couldn't trust, but he'd try and give another chance. This would be a mistake.
After all this, Héctor was eager for distraction, something he found with Nekane, going out to experiencing the nicer parts of Hell which occasionally existed and growing more comfortable with one another or causing mischief via spa flooding. Even when put into unpleasant situations, the two began to find ways of making the best of it, enjoying each other's company and getting through on spiting the demons that set them up.
Unfortunately, he wouldn't just be set up with Nekane. Thrown unwilling into a virtual reality, Héctor and Dodger were made to believe they had feelings for each other, something that didn't fade so easily, especially when Héctor's memories were briefly tampered with after. Dodger, Squalo, and Nekane would all help in their ways with increasing helpfulness.
With complicated feelings involved, Dodger invited Héctor to his birthday. Knowing this was stupid, he warned Nekane beforehand, who then insisted on coming along. Squalo was also there. Initially tense, things seemed to settle, and even become friendly. This did not last. The party ended with Dodger attacking Nekane and Héctor punching Dodger in the face and taking Nekane away. Though he considered cutting Dodger off, Nekane suggested something distant and slowly weened off, that way Dodger wouldn't be angered into attacking Héctor again.
That same month, Lucifer let a sinner rule for a day to prove a point and naturally chaos ensued. A rebellion was set and while there were many different motives and methods, Héctor's focus was on getting rid of the club, the place where the sucubi and incubi roamed. He thought this way he could prevent people from being hurt like he and Nekane had. He checked it was empty and then destoryed it completely with the explosives he'd been given.
This had immediate consequences as those same demons moved directly into the hotel and lurked there. Another sinner's attempt at magic caused strange changes in sinners all over Hell. Héctor experienced changes much like the demons inflicted on him, but more pressing was Nekane's change. They suddenly appeared as the angel they once were, panicking that their old cult brainwashing would set in. Héctor sought to calm them but things got worse, as Nekane began showing the injuries that their old cult had inflicted on them bit by bit as Héctor carried and cared for them. He felt helpless and scared and terribly heartbroken, but most of all he felt an anger unlike anything he ever had before over what had been done to his best friend, to Nekane. He decided, for them and to keep demons back, he'd be willing to fight and he asked Squalo to teach him how.
February rolled around. Dodger tried to worm his way in again. Héctor set his terms. Hell did not care and, once again, tricked Dodger and Héctor into intimacy. Prior to this drugging, he did at least manage a nice dance with Nekane, and it was during that he began to suspect he had some feelings for them.
Next month, God had finally decided upon the extra punishment he wanted to happen for the destruction of Hell. A stepford style suburbia was made, everyone brainwashed into families and fit into roles (made young to be children or more feminine to be wives). Héctor was made a wife and given a family of a husband who didn't love him and two boys who never came home. The horrors of the town, his loneliness, and the conflicting memories of his real family soon made it difficult to play along. He was punished and tortured again and again. Nekane eventually sought escape in the only way they knew-- being caught and killed. Though he didn't want to, he let Nekane as it was what they wanted. This, however, only caused him to break down further. He was rescued by Dodger who brought Héctor to his home and offered comfort and music and talks of rebellion. Still, even that wasn't enough and like Nekane, Héctor was soon flayed alive.
Nekane and he were revived, to their surprise, and brought back to the hotel. They reunited and apologized to each other and decided to move in together, out of the hotel. Although the Hellburbia experiment had been terrible to them, he hated hotels and they gutted a house to make it their own, a place they'd come to love.
The next month brought a second round of harsh punishment. Still, he and Nekane held out and even Dodger tried to help. Héctor, by this point, was experiencing ill-advised feelings for both of them. Unbeknownst to him though, Squalo had been seeking revenge against Dodger for an earlier strife. Dodger, also liking Squalo, wanted him back. To make ammends Dodger offers to let Squalo kill a loved one, chosing Héctor to die as means to hurt him (though he thinks of Francis, another boyfriend first).
Squalo goes after Francis but fails and then comes for Héctor as well. Squalo takes Héctor as hostage to make Dodger angrier and Héctor feels angry and betrayed with both of them- Squalo for making him a tool in a revenge plot that will force him to see his friends hurt and Dodger for setting this up. Just as he convinces Squalo to let him go so he can talk things over with Dodger, Dodger kills Squalo making the whole thing for nothing. He shouts at Dodger for gambling him, confesses his love for Dodger and declares it was a mistake in the same breath.
The next month, half of Penance is drawn into a shoddy and sinister Insane Asylum, with matching torture and monsters in the night, transformation, and more. Amidst all this is the interpersonal drama between Héctor, Squalo, Dodger, and periferally, Nekane. Tired and hurt but preferring less problems now that they're stuck together, Héctor tries to settle and calm things with everyone, as well as trying to keep them safe. Once freed of all the horrors and repaired, Héctor apologizes to Lucifer for destorying the club and causing these harsher punishments, trying also to speak to God but to no avail.
The Carnival comes to hell and Héctor goes the extra mile to make sure his friends remain unharmed, throwing himself into unpleasant acts to appease and distract. When another set of new sinners seek to rebel in the most violent of ways, he tries to stop it (alongside a select few others). Soon after this, thanks to many rounds of punishment and redemptive work, Héctor earns his wings.
A Cult within Hell, one that had done massive damage the first month he'd shown up and during Hellburbia, began to make a move then. Many recieved invitations to an event. Knowing Nekane would investigate, he went along too. This resulted in drugging and the two of them foght each other before helping each other home. Though Dodger would claim otherwise, he too went to see the cult.
For a little while, besides Squalo's romantic troubles, there was peace and Héctor finally mastered his wings enough to show Nekane flight. But then, people began waking up with missing time and new cult tattoos. Those who attented the meeting recieved a list of loved ones with the demand that people hurt them in "the worst way" in order to prove loyalty. Héctor and Nekane destroyed their lists without looking, ignoring an impulse they couldn't fulfil anyway. Dodger, however, had other plans. He believed that the cult, not Lucifer or God, would help Héctor truly get home.
Dodger began to work through his list. He caught Nekane, trapped them, tortured, and assaulted them. Héctor, terrified over the fact Nekane was missing, went looking for them. He instead found a terrible scene left behind that left little doubt over what had happened. Snapping at last, Héctor went out to kill Dodger and find Nekane. Dodger faced him and hurt him effortlessly, taunting all the while as Héctor spat his hatred. Due only to a friend's suggestion to bring a gun and sheer dumb luck, he actually managed to kill Dodger. He stumbled his way to finding Nekane and died alongside them, apologizing and reassurring.
It's a difficult time for Nekane and Héctor after that, though he tries his best to support them and gives Dodger nothing. Only when Héctor is possessed by an evil spirit and Dodger frees him does Héctor exspress more; he rails at Dodger, furious and pained that Dodger never managed to be better after all that time and effort and that Dodger could hurt Nekane- could hurt him specifically in the way he'd torn himself apart to prevent this from the very beginning, and all for a cult, the very thing that had destroyed Nekane and Dodger in their respective youths.
Finally, it is time for Héctor to redeem out of Hell. He says goodbye to a number of old friends who still remain. Nekane is the last, and he saves it to the last very moment to confess his love to them, keeping his promise to leave them free, to stay unattached, assuring he knows they fear love and this way they can think of him however they like but know that he really did love them. He then flies off and finds his redemption, which returns him right where he was back home without memory.
Years passed for him in the land of the dead but it only a week or so before he'd returned to Hell. He assumed he'd faded away (met his "Final" death) in the cenote. Believing he'd lost his chance at home and his daughter forever, he found it hard to keep up anything at all. He returned as a skeleton and greeted his shocked and sadened friends. Nekane and he dodged around the topic of love right up until the New Year when Nekane proposed, panicked, then vanished (canon updated), only to return with their wings horribly damaged and their mind not much better.
Héctor fell right back in with taking care of them, this mostly going well except for an accidental marriage that occured. After a lot of talks and working things out, they decided they were okay with it and Héctor proudly became Héctor Rivera Adomaitis. They were not out of the woods for trouble, but they had this.
Meanwhile, Squalo's romantic troubles came to a head and his ex, Xanxus, decided to torture and kill Héctor for information via fire magic. Lucifer also faced trouble, being detained and dethroned by the demon Barbas who intended upon more cruelty and mind control, including the return of brainwashed Hellburbia. Knowing he couldn't let Nekane suffer that again, let alone endure it himself, he at last allowed himself to join another rebellion, one he didn't see himself surviving. He sent Nekane off, hoping they'd be safe, but they merely returned to him, and though initially upset, he was also happy to have one last moment with Nekane. They caused chaos for Barbas's troops and died together (What he believed to be his eight death, actually his seventh).
With his revival, even with realising he was no longer a skeleton but flesh, he immediately had to restrain Nekane to keep them from hurting themself, preforming a very back-alley style surgery on their wings once he calmed them enough to keep them from doing worse as they'd done before. The experience was unpleasant and highly emotional for both. He sought solace later in a woman named Red whom he'd met at New Years and was no probably his sanest remaining friend. The sinners then all took a trip to Mammon's domain (the demon who had helped defeat Barbas).
The vacation was short lived, as they'd all expected by this point. Although Héctor took his chance to get a tattoo replacement for an old scar Nekane had given him and he'd lost, and had time to give some parting advice for his old friend Squalo, who was finally finding new (better) love, the vacation ultimately ended with him being caught by Mammon's demons, tortured and transformed for the sake of the third Hell's Carnival, made to preform just as before. Nekane attempted to free him but was caught and imprisoned until the carnival was over. With that last resurection of old trauma, he and Nekane were ready to go home.
❥ Personality: Héctor's best and worst traits were inextricably linked. He was kind, doting, and deeply affectionate and welcoming to those he cared for, giving every ounce of his heart (shown this his family, with friends). But he spread himself thin before the events of the movie, trying to gain this from all the world and seeking favor in people who would throw him away (Ernesto).
He's perceptive of the emotions of others and quickly accommodating to the needs of those around him. When a child is scared, he lowers himself down to their level and speaks softer (Miguel). When encouragement or distraction is called for, he's quick to provide. He offers distance and physical comfort however it matches the other person's needs, even if it conflicted with his own wishes (He notes Miguel's discomfort at one point and lowers himself down, speaks softer).
Initially, he had little to no backbone. Where more powerful personalities were involved he'd shrink like a scolded dog (facing Imelda) and for those he's less afraid of he'd still offer little defence or excuse for himself (facing Cheech, Ceci), to the point it would make things worse. He grew up under the wing of his best friend, Ernesto, a boy four years older with a penchant for emotional manipulation but has since been on a long journey separating from that, and with the events of Penance, he's become very firm about what he will and will not tolerate. He's grown tired and bitter and is very aware of the choices that were denied to him. He's become very aware of the kind of people who will hurt him (between Ernesto, Squalo, and Dodger) and others, and that he needs to be far more careful with his trust.
Héctor is very determined. For nearly a century he focused solely on reaching his daughter, getting home, even at the cost of friendships or himself-- he's broken many bones in his efforts. This held through in Hell when his initial fear gave way to a need to look out for those close to him. He pushed himself through many things he'd never wanted or considered himself capable of doing, for the sake of trying to help and protect. He often took on pain, punishment, and humiliation to spare others from it. He learned to fight even though he'd previously disliked the thought of hurting another. Between this, trying to protect Nekane countless times, and Dodger's cruelty and betrayal, he was eventually driven to fight back.
In the land of the dead, he built a wily persona, tunnel visioning on his desire and forgetting how he might sound in his desperation. In Hell, he gained another sort, the hardened old man who's been around for a long time, neither persona letting him find peace as he'd compartmentalize pain and cover up with cheer or casualness. In some cases, he can be open, but in others, he hides his past, all depending on circumstance and who he's talking to, if it be a problem or burden.
Within the film, Héctor comments that he hates musicians as he thinks they're self-important jerks. While this is directed at others, it's all a reflection of his opinion on himself, believing that he must have had an inflated ego in life to do what he did. He is not shy to boast in little ways, but the truth is that his opinion of himself is poor. This has not gotten better, applying to his family (or lack of) and things that took place in Hell. He bears a great deal of guilt for things that happened, especially when loved ones, like Nekane, were caught in the crossfire.
Within the movie, he could be silly and charming and inspiring (his work touched hearts and sent his friend soaring to fame) as well as moody and immature (teasing and mocking all for laughs, sulking and shoving when mockery is turned on him). He was a perpetual young adult. But, in moments of quiet or necessity, and more so now, some maturity-- or perhaps just trauma-- shows through. Though wearier now and certainly slower to trust, far more cynical and deadpan, he does make a note of people who need help and understanding and tries to offer that.
❥ Abilities: None! Nothing magic. He's learned how to use knives and some other weaponry in hell. Had abilities as a Skeleton to come apart and piece back together which are no longer applicable. Once had wings but doesn't now.
❥ Extras: Héctor's bringing his guitar, his songbook, his family photo. Please sort him to whatever God Nekane is aligned with.
